Company Profile
Company Overview
The Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute is an NCI Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center recognized for its outstanding research focused solely on the prevention and cure of cancer. All research at the Center is organized in the Moffitt Research Institute (MRI) and further classified into six research programs, which are:
• Molecular Oncology
• Drug Discovery
• Immunology
• Experimental Therapeutics
• Risk Assessment, Detection & Intervention
• Health Outcomes & Behavior
Cancer research requires dedicated faculty and staff from laboratory technicians, graduate students, career scientists, and post-docs from a variety of academic backgrounds who add to the Center’s diverse research efforts.
Research at the Center includes over $43 million in extramural funding, including $29 million in NCI funding. Over 250,000 square feet is dedicated to research for over 140 investigators. With generous institutional investments, the MRI supports 16 shared resources, which provide specialized support and highly trained staff for investigators across all programs. Laboratories at the Center have an open design around central hallways promoting collaboration among and between programs. To facilitate biomedical research, all laboratories are in proximity to shared resources, common equipment and specialty rooms.
The foundation of research is Basic research and encompasses the areas of immunology, tumor microenvironment, signal transduction, gene regulation, drug discovery, chemistry, structural biology, chemoprevention, genetics, cellular therapies, functional genomics and proteomics.
Clinical research at the Center involves more than 50 investigators and emphasizes the theme of translating original laboratory studies of molecular mechanisms and pathways of cancer to new therapeutic approaches. Clinical trials are an integral part of clinical research with an emphasis on Phase I, I/II and II trials. In 2005, faculty from the Experimental Therapeutics Program accrued 1357 patients to therapeutic trials and 491(44%) of these were to Investigator-initiated trials.
Cancer prevention and control research focuses on population studies, susceptibility, clinical interventions and behaviors (such as smoking cessation) for the prevention of cancer, early detection (including molecular markers, imaging, and nano-technology), health outcomes, and improving quality of life. This research takes place in a wide variety of settings from the laboratory to the clinic to the community and requires dedicated individuals with a variety of training including statistics, behavioral research, nutrition, community outreach, and laboratory methods.
Research Administration manages and supports the research infrastructure; provides good stewardship of external and internal funding; and provides the best support possible for Moffitt researchers. Areas within Research Administration include investigator support, grant and contract management (Pre Award and Post Award), finance, clinical trials management, lab safety, and research compliance.
